The Brussels Battle (Harvest Moonball Format)

A strictly formatted competition takes place this weekend, with prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. Both rounds follow the Harvest Moonball format: 4 to 5 couples dance simultaneously for approximately 3 minutes at a tempo of 220–250 BPM, using recorded music. Only one winner is selected per heat and per final. Judges will come from different countries.

Prelims will take place on Saturday at 20:30 at Maison de la Poste. Depending on the number of participants, there will be 3 to 4 heats, each with 3 to 5 couples. Dancers may pre-select the heat they wish to participate in. Only the winner of each heat will advance to the final.

The final takes place on Saturday night at 23:30 during the party. A maximum of 5 couples will compete, and the round will last approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds, with the tempo pushing up to 250 BPM.

Jazz Battle (Solo)

A Jazz Battle (solo) will take place on Saturday afternoon at Les Halles Saint-Géry. The format includes prelims followed by a final in a “continuous queue” battle format (also known as 7-to-Smoke or King of the Hill).

In the finals, 5 dancers are selected. The first to reach 5 points wins, or, if time runs out, the dancer with the most points takes the victory. Each dancer has 1 minute to express themselves before the opponent responds. Expect a mix of swing, RnB, blues — maybe even mambo.

Prelims

Prelims will run in waves. Depending on the number of participants, each wave will include 1 to 4 dancers performing simultaneously for about 1 minute. If needed, a second round will be held in the same format to determine the 5 finalists. Independent judges will select one champion per wave or round to move forward.

Finals

Format and rules will be clearly explained by the MC. Each dancer gets 1 minute per round in a head-to-head battle.

Rookie Mix & Match

A Mix & Match specifically for dancers with 3 years or less of swing dance experience. It takes place on Sunday afternoon at Maison de la Poste

Prelims

Held Sunday at the tea dance (Maison de la poste) at 16h30 followed by the finale, at the front of the venue across a few songs, with participants shuffling partners whenever the MC calls “Mix & Match!” Judges ensure fairness so all dancers get a chance to participate. Selected dancers (leaders, followers, or switch) will be identified with a flower collar.

Finals

6 selected couples will get a warm-up song, then each performs one swing chorus (16x8), followed by an all-skate (everyone dances together).

FAQ

Q: Is the 3-year rule based on a specific role?
A: No — it’s less than 3 years of swing dancing in general, regardless of role.
Q: What if I took a break for a year?
A: That’s fine — you can subtract that time from your total.
Q: What if I’ve done other dance styles before?
A: Only Lindy Hop or other swing dances are taken into account.
